A tree without roots doesn’t thrive

The exhibition presented at ItsasMuseum is the result of a lively and exciting project led by the Spanish-Brazilian photographer Angélica Dass. It has involved the participation of 196 students of Secondary Education from six public schools in Bilbao: IES Ibarrekolanda, IES Txurdinaga Behekoa BHI, Centro Formativo Otxarkoaga, IES Martín Bertendona BHI, IES Miguel de Unamuno and IES Artabe, who have created a migratory family tree from personal memories and stories, family albums and archives.

Erakusketa Angélica Dass argazkilari espainiar-brasildarrak gidatutako proiektu bizi eta zirraragarri baten emaitza da. Bertan, Bilboko Derrigorrezko Bigarren Hezkuntzako (DBH) eta Batxilergoko sei ikastetxe publikotako 196 ikaslek hartu dute parte: IES Ibarrekolanda, IES Txurdinaga Behekoa BHI, Otxarkoaga Heziketa Zentroa, IES Martín Bertendona BHI, IES Miguel de Unamuno eta IES Artabe.

Ikasleek, memoria eta kontakizun pertsonaletan, familia-albumetan eta artxiboetan oinarritutako migrazio-zuhaitz genealogiko bat sortuz,  gure historia partekatuaren funtsezko zati gisa, migrazio-fenomenoaren ikerketan sakondu dute, bai barnekoa zein kanpokoa edo nazioartekoa.

The exhibition features a mural with more than 300 portraits, accounts of their stories and other photographs of representative objects. An ‘interactive wall’ designed to encourage participation and the creation of a collective piece in real time invites visitors to share their own migration story and, in addition to doing so in situ, they can transmit it online under the exhibition hashtag #gurezuhaitza.

Itsasmuseumen artistak ikasleekin egindako esplorazio-prozesu horren emaitzak aurkezten ditu, ikasleen 300 erretratu baino gehiagoko mural bat erakutsiz, haien historiaren kontakizunak eta haien objektu adierazgarrien argazkiak. Artistak ikasleen 300 erretratu baino gehiagoko mural bat erakusten du, haien historiaren kontakizunak eta objektu adierazgarrien argazkiakin batera.

Parte hartzea bultzatzeko eta denbora errealean pieza kolektibo bat sortzeko pentsatutako “horma interaktibo” batek gonbidatzen ditu bisitariak beren migrazio-historia partekatzera, eta, in situ egiteaz gain, online transmititu ahal izango dute #gurezuhaitza erakusketaren etiketarekin.

Maps and graphics will illustrate the origin of the migrant communities in Bilbao yesterday and today. The exhibition is accompanied by a selection of books on migration of different genres, including the publication of the initiative, located in the exhibition hall itself for public consultation, in what is intended to become a space for meeting, reflection and conversation between generations.

The artistic approach invites reflection on the premise that migration is not simply a social phenomenon, but an intrinsic characteristic of the human condition, and aims to foster a playful exchange to discover and connect our own migration stories with those represented in the exhibition.

Mapa eta grafiko batzuek Bilboko atzoko eta gaurko komunitate migratzaileen jatorria irudikatzen  dute. Erakusketarekin batera, hainbat generotako migrazioari buruzko liburuen aukeraketa bat egin da, eta horien artean azpimarratzekoa da ekimenaren argitalpena, jendaurreko kontsultarako aretoan bertan kokatuak, belaunaldien arteko topaketa, hausnarketa eta elkarrizketarako gune bihurtu nahi duena.

Ikuspegi artistikoak, alde batetik, migrazioa ez dela fenomeno sozial bat soilik, giza izaeraren berezko ezaugarri bat baizik gogoeta egitera gonbidatzen du eta, bestetik, trukaketa ludiko bat bultzatu nahi du, gure migrazio-istorioak eta erakusketan adierazitakoak aurki eta lotu daitezen.

Angelica's proposals are transformative both in the process of creation and in the process of displaying the results.

About A tree without roots doesn't thrive

Sustrairik gabeko zuhaitzak ez du aurrera egiten – A tree without roots does not thrive is a project developed by Angélica Dass in six schools in Bilbao within the framework of the Art for Change Call of the Fundación la Caixa, which promotes art and culture as drivers of change.

The project promotes the development of artistic processes generated from a positive choral narrative of migrations and cultural diversity in the community. It works on the image, identity and the archive with students in Secondary Education, researching the memory and family albums of internal and international migrations.

Sustrairik gabeko zuhaitzak ez du aurrera egiten – A tree without roots does not thrive is a collective and multidisciplinary work that allows us to identify common elements and point out that migration and cultural diversity are consubstantial to human nature and community life. Recognising diversity, promoting equality and positive interaction are the central elements of an intercultural city.
