Humanae is a photographic work in progress by artist Angélica Dass. Currently composed of more than 4,500 portraits from volunteers all around the globe, Humanæ pursues to document humanity’s true colors and bring up a critical reflection on the white, red, black and yellow false labels associated with race. The project does not select participants and there is no date set for its completion. It is a journey of open-ended possibilities that enriches the way we see ourselves, beyond faces and colors. Nowadays, the artist has been doing portraits in 38 different cities and 20 different countries.

During the presentation week of the anniversary year at the end of March 2025, Angélica Dass captured more than 100 inhabitants of Schiedam with her camera. These portraits can be seen alongside those of other participants from all over the world in the large open-air exhibition curated by Angélica Dass herself and organized by Fu Den Sani Foundation, forming a contemporary mosaic of the town. Mayor Harald Bergmann opened the exhibition on May 21. The exhibition is followed by an extensive program of events that will run until July 18, 2025.

Humanæ: Colors in Schiedam is more than an exhibition. It creates lively meeting places where the stories of the residents come together, from the youngest to the oldest, where the city reflects itself, where everyone is seen.

Photo shoot

At the public photo sessions organized by Fu Den Sani Foundation that took place in the prestigious Theater aan de Schie, all Schiedam residents were invited to participate and be photographed by Angélica Dass to become part of the Humanae project.

Schiedam is getting a special art project in which residents themselves play the leading role.

Workshops for educators

Stedelijk Museum Schiedam facilitated a training for educators. In this workshop Angélica Dass provided tools to address issues such as cultural identity and anti-racism in the classroom to different professionals who will be able to multiply Humanae’s message in Schiedam’s educational institutions.

Workshops for children

A module installed in the festival Schiefest has served as a popular classroom for self-portrait workshops with children and other residents of Schiedam. The result of these workshops will be shown in an exhibition of the children’s portraits in the public library in the centre of Schiedam.

City Conversations

Part of the extensive side program were three events of ’Schiedam Spreekt!’, organized by Fu Den Sani Foundation in co-operation with Theater aan de Schie. In these interactive evenings Schiedammers were invited to converse with a nationally well-known Schiedammer and discuss themes that are alive in the city. Through connecting and sharing stories they shaped their colorful and hyper diverse city further together.

Design
The exhibition design by Atelier Argos was organized around the central Stadserf square, with triangular structures to show the Humanae project, even at night, thanks to the LED lighting of each structure.
