Art, education and migration stories

Gurezuhaitza – A tree without roots does not thrive is the project that photographer Angélica Dass has developed in six educational centres in Bilbao as part of the Art for Change de la Fundación la Caixa initiative to promote art and culture as drivers of change. 196 secondary school students actively participated in the project by contributing their own migration stories and those of their families.

Migrating is a huge change for a person, where the least important thing is where you are going

I have never emigrated in my life; I was born in Bilbao, but I have been treated as a migrant because of my origins. It feels as if I do not belong to the place where I have belonged all my life

About Gurezuhaitza - A tree without roots does not thrive

Sustrairik gabeko zuhaitzak ez du aurrera egiten – A tree without roots does not thrive is a project developed by Angélica Dass in six schools in Bilbao within the framework of the Art for Change Call of the Fundación la Caixa, which promotes art and culture as drivers of change.

The project promotes the development of artistic processes generated from a positive choral narrative of migrations and cultural diversity in the community. It works on the image, identity and the archive with students in Secondary Education, researching the memory and family albums of internal and international migrations.

Sustrairik gabeko zuhaitzak ez du aurrera egiten – A tree without roots does not thrive is a collective and multidisciplinary work that allows us to identify common elements and point out that migration and cultural diversity are consubstantial to human nature and community life. Recognising diversity, promoting equality and positive interaction are the central elements of an intercultural city.
